5 Common Mistakes in Quran Recitation and How to Avoid Them

Arabic is a sensitive language. A slight shift in tongue position can turn 'Heart' (Qalb) into 'Dog' (Kalb). Here are the top mistakes we see at Aleha Learn.

1. Mixing Heavy and Light Letters

Letters like Seen (s) and Sad (S), or Ta (t) and Toa (T). The heavy letters require raising the back of the tongue. Practice them in pairs to hear the difference.

2. The 'R' Sound (Ra)

Unlike the English 'R', the Arabic Ra is trilled and can be heavy or light depending on the vowel. Many beginners use a static American 'R', which is incorrect.

3. Ignoring Madd (Elongation)

Shortening a long vowel or elongating a short one changes the word count. 'La' (No) is different from 'Laa' (Surely). Timing is everything in Tajweed.

4. Stopping Incorrectly

Stopping in the middle of a sentence can invert the meaning. For example, "Divorced women wait..." versus "Divorced women..." [stop]. Learning the symbols of stopping (Waqf) is crucial.
