Memorizing the Quran is a spiritual and mental marathon. It transforms the heart and sharpens the mind. Whether you are starting your child on this path or beginning it yourself, success lies in consistency and technique.
The Golden Rule: Sincerity (Ikhlas)
Before beginning, correct your intention. Is this for the sake of Allah alone? Sincerity is the fuel that will keep you going when the verses become difficult to retain.
Steps to Successful Memorization
1. Correction (Talqeen)
Never memorize text you haven't read to a teacher. Memorizing a mistake is easy; unlearning it is extremely hard.
2. Repetition (Takrar)
Repeat the verse until it flows off your tongue without effort. Scholars recommend repeating a new lesson at least 20-40 times.
3. Review (Muraja'ah)
The Prophet (PBUH) likened the Quran to a camel that needs to be tied; otherwise, it runs away. Dedicate more time to reviewing old parts than memorizing new ones.
Diet and Sleep
A sharp memory requires a healthy body. Ensure adequate sleep, especially before Fajr, which is the golden time for memorization. Avoid heavy foods that cause lethargy.
