The 114 Surahs are categorized by where they were revealed. But this isn't just about geography; it's about the stage of the mission.
Makki: The Architecture of Faith
Revealed when Muslims were a persecuted minority. These Surahs are short, poetic, and fiery. They focus on Tawheed, the Day of Judgment, and challenging the pagan beliefs. They are designed to shake the heart. (e.g., Surah Qariah, Surah Takwir).
Madani: The Architecture of Society
Revealed after the logic of a state was established. These Surahs are longer and prosaic. They deal with law (Sharia), inheritance, marriage, war, and dealings with People of the Book. They assume faith is already there and now instruct on how to live it. (e.g., Surah Baqarah, Surah Nisa).
