'Allahu Akbar' is the specific phrase chosen to start the prayer (Takbirat al-Ihram). It is the door code to enter the Divine Court. But translation "God is Great" is insufficient. It is comparative: "God is GreatER".
Greater Than What?
Greater than whatever you were doing before you started praying. Greater than the email you need to send. Greater than the sleep you want. Greater than the worry in your heart. By saying it, you are belittling your Dunya problems in the face of His Majesty.
The Movement of Surrender
When you raise your hands for Takbir, it looks like an act of surrender. You are throwing the world behind your back and standing empty-handed before your King. Capturing this feeling changes your Salah from a robotic ritual into an emotional relief.
