The Science of Tajweed: Articulation Points (Makharij) Explained

Articulation points, or 'Makharij', are the specific parts of the mouth, throat, or nose where sound is produced. There are 5 main areas (Jawf, Halq, Lisan, Shafatan, Khayshum) and 17 specific points.

The Throat Letters (Halqiyah)

Many non-Arabs struggle here. We have the deepest part of the throat (for Hamza, Ha), the middle (for 'Ain, Ha), and the top (for Ghain, Kha). Mastering the 'Ain sound often requires isolating the middle throat muscle.

The Tongue (Lisan)

The tongue is the busiest articulator, responsible for 18 letters. The most complex is often 'Daad' (ض), which uses the side of the tongue pressing against the upper molars. It's so unique that Arabic is called the "Language of the Daad".

Training Your Mouth

Think of Tajweed as speech therapy or gym for your mouth. You are training muscles you have never consciously used before. It takes repetition and, most importantly, a teacher to spotcheck your placement.
