The word 'Tajweed' linguistically means 'proficiency' or 'doing something well'. Applied to the Quran, it means giving every letter its rights and dues of characteristics (Sifaat) and exit points (Makharij).
Is Tajweed Obligatory?
Ibn Al-Jazari, the great scholar of Quran, stated that applying Tajweed is an obligation upon every Muslim. Why? Because reciting the Quran incorrectly can change the meaning of the words, which is a sin if done out of negligence.
Common Tajweed Rules to Know
- Makharij (Exit Points): Knowing exactly where each sound originates in the throat or mouth.
- Ghunnah: The nasal sound associated with the letters Nun and Mim.
- Qalqalah: The echoing sound produced when pronouncing certain letters (Qaf, Taa, Ba, Jeem, Dal).
