What is a Juz, Hizb, and Ruku? Quran Structure 101

When you open a Quran, you see various symbols in the margins. They are navigational markers designed to help you pace your reading.

Juz (Part)

The Quran is divided into 30 equal parts called Juz (plural: Ajza). This allows a person to complete the Quran in one month by reading one Juz a day, a practice common in Ramadan.

Hizb (Group) and Rub' (Quarter)

Each Juz is divided into two Hizb. Each Hizb is further divided into quarters (Rub'). This is helpful for Hifz students setting smaller daily targets.

Ruku (Section)

Marked by the Arabic letter 'Ain' (ع) in the margin. A Ruku represents a thematic unit—a complete story or topic. It is the recommended place to stop recitation during Salah so you don't cut a thought in half.
